PENDLETON – The National Weather Service has now extended its excessive heat warning through the holiday weekend. It had been set to expire at 8 p.m. Thursday, but Meteorologist Matt Callihan said there’s nothing strong enough to move the dome or ridge of air that’s blanketing the Pacific Northwest.
“That’s one of the reasons why we’re seeing this heat stick around for such a long period,” he said. “It’s just not really moving anywhere with this ridge.”
The only thing in the immediate future is a low pressure system that is moving into Canada, but Callihan said it’s too weak to make a big difference in the heat as it moves inland Wednesday.
“It’s really not going to do much in terms of the ridge,” he said. “It’s pretty much just going to elongate it from southern Saskatchewan through our area into Nevada and northern California.” The extreme heat warning is now set to expire at 8 p.m. Sunday, July 4. At this point, the National Weather Service is predicting Monday’s high temperature will be 98 degrees in Pendleton, near 99 in Walla Walla, and near 100 in Hermiston.
