WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla City Council holds its regular meeting tonight (Wednesday) at 6:30 p.m. The council will have a presentation and discussion regarding the American Rescue Plan Act funding and work on approving two resolutions for the purchase of a fire engine and improvements at the Mill Creek Sportsplex including the construction of pickleball courts.

The city has been awarded more than $9.9 million from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. One-half has been received and the second half is due in 2022.

The council will also hold a public hearing and amend an interim zoning ordinance and definitions of distilleries. The 2nd Street Distillery currently operates in downtown Walla Walla and has indicated a desire to expand its spirits offerings but will no longer fall under the state or city municipal code definition due to product origin issues. According to city records, the business  is pursuing a change in license type with the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board, and the proposed municipal code change would allow them to keep operating in the same way they have, with no product origin requirement and with the same volume production limitation.

The city council will meet in person in the council chambers.  Due to distancing requirements and occupancy restrictions, there are 30 seats available for the public to attend. Any overflow may view the meeting in the Fulton Room at the Walla Walla Police Department, 54 East Moore Street.  The council meeting will also be streamed on the city’s website and the public may participate via Zoom.  Meeting ID is 869 4741 5322.
