PENDLETON – The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for a large part of the region beginning today (Tuesday) at 11 a.m. and lasting until 8 p.m. Thursday. Communities in the advisory area include Pendleton, Hermiston, Boardman, Ione, Pilot Rock, Sunnyside, Yakima, Walla Walla and the Tri-Cities.
Daytime highs of 97 to 105 degrees are expected. High temperatures may cause heat-related illnesses. People are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room if possible, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets are especially vulnerable and should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
If people must work or spend time outside, extra precautions should be taken. If possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of both heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear loose fighting, lightweight clothing if at all possible. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and 911 should be called.
