WALLA WALLA – The Washington State Department of Transportation is constructing a roundabout this summer at the intersection of Plaza Way and State Route 125. The prime contractor for the project is Nelson Construction Corporation of Walla Walla. Now the city wants to hear from residents about whether they prefer full or partial closure during that construction.
With full closure, motorists would have to detour around the construction. This option would significantly shorten the amount of time the construction will take. Under the full closure option, construction would begin July 6 and end before Labor Day weekend and the Walla Walla County Fair.
The partial closure option would allow motorists to travel through the intersection in each direction, but at a slower speed than normal. The roadway will be flagged, and delays will occur. The road surface will be dirt or gravel and will be rough in places. There will also be periodic nighttime closures of the access to Plaza Way and The Dalles Military Road. This option would also mean the construction will take about twice as long, running from July 6 through the end of October.
