New Floodplain maps being discussed

LA GRANDE – The City of La Grande held a work session last night (Monday night) with a presentation by Anderson Perry, discussing an update on digital floodplain maps.
For the past several years the City has been working to update its floodplain maps. The current maps are very outdated and were initially established in the 1970’s, with minor update occurring in the 1980’ and again in the early 1990’s. For this mapping update process, the City contracted with Anderson-Perry and Associates to use modern satellite imagery and 3D modeling to analyze the floodplain within the City of La Grande and to develop a reasonably accurate map that depicts the flooding that may occur during a 100-year storm event. For the City’s Council’s work session Monday night, Anderson-Perry presented the new floodplain maps that the City intends on submitting to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for consideration.
The proposed floodplain maps can be accessed and viewed from the City of La Grande Planning Division website at http://planning.cityoflagrande.org. This is an interactive map where a property owner may pan around the map and zoom into their property to determine if it is proposed to be inside or outside of the floodplain. Monday night’s presentation to the City Council, Anderson-Perry and presented the maps directly from the Planning Division website. Next/Coming Up: On June 14th, the City Council will be holding a Special Session to make a formal decision on submitting the floodplain maps to FEMA which will start the Federal process for getting new floodplain maps. The June 14th Council meeting will be held via Zoom and the public will have the opportunity to attend by teleconference and ask questions. A public notice for the June 14th meeting will be sent out by my office later this week.
