Courthouse gets renovation grant

WALLA WALLA – Walla Walla County is set to receive almost $1.2 million dollars in state grant money to restore and preserve the exterior of the historic courthouse. The Walla Walla County Board of Commissioners state that with the support of Sen. Perry Dozier (R-Waitsburg), Rep. Skyler Rude (R-Walla Walla and Rep. Mark Klicker (R-Walla Walla was included in the new budget passed by the Washington Legislature Sunday.

Board Chairman Greg Tompkins is credited with initiating the research leading to the grant application. A committee was established to address the preservation of both the jail and the courthouse.

“The Board of County Commissioners is appreciative of the committee’s participation and thank them for their input,” a news release from the board stated.

The funding will be used to restore and preserve the exterior of the courthouse, including the necessary stonework. The grant will help ensure the historic courthouse, built in 1916, will be preserved for generations.
