PENDLETON – The Pendleton City Council has changed the ordinance banning electric vehicles from city parks. That means electric vehicles that go nine miles per hour or less can operate on the Pendleton River Parkway.
The change was made to allow Bird Scooters users to use the parkway for their rental scooters. In the parks, the operators of the vehicles must always yield to pedestrians.
There are a rules for operating the scooters throughout the city and Mayor John Turner wants to make the public aware of them. One is to stay off the sidewalks. Another is to protect the noggin.
“I’m seeing people riding these things with smiles on their faces, but I’m also seeing nobody wearing a helmet,” he said.
Renters are also required to stay off Pendleton’s sidewalks and to avoid hazards when their ride is done. “I’ve seen them parked neatly in front of buildings downtown, and I’ve seen them laying on the sidewalk,” Turner said.
