PENDLETON – Mayor John Turner said that with new complexes going up for all income levels, Pendleton’s housing shortage is beginning to show relief. He said another thing the city needs are more single-family units for all income levels. He’s optimistic that landowners and developers will begin to turn that shortage around.
“The city is quietly working with some property owners to assure them that if they’ve got a developer and they’ve got a real plan, we will support them with infrastructure,” he said.
Turner said the expense of installing infrastructure will be paid back over time.
“We’ll have to borrow the money to do it,” he said. “It takes pipes and wires and pump stations and asphalt and it’s expensive. But we’re willing to do it because we think that the lack of housing at all levels is a drag on Pendleton’s economy.”
