Man arrested for several charges including using a hatchet on a dog

La Grande – (Information provided by the La Grande Police Department) The Cory Hamilton incident occurred Thursday (March 18, 2021) at 1232 hours.  Dispatch received a 911 call from an employee of Grande Ronde Recovery stating that a woman from La Grande came into the business reporting that a person had just attacked her dog with a hatchet.  Officers from the La Grande Police Department and Deputies from the Union County Sheriff’s Office immediately responded and arrived moments after receiving the call.

The woman told the investigating officers that she was walking her dog on a leash, when a male person (later identified as Cory Hamilton, 36 of La Grande) unknown to her asked for a cigarette. She said that when she told Hamilton that she did not have a cigarette for him, he attacked her dog with a hatchet – causing injury to her dog.  

Officers immediately contacted Hamilton who was in the area.  Hamilton was in possession of the hatchet when he was contacted by officers and he was immediately arrested.  Hamilton resisted arrest, but the officers and deputies on scene were able to take Hamilton into custody without any further injuries to anyone involved.  During the investigation, the officers also learned that Hamilton had threatened the staff member at Grande Ronde Recovery prior to the police arrival.  

The woman’s dog was treated at Valley Veterinary Center for a laceration to the dog’s facial area and was released.  Hamilton was arrested and lodged into the Union County Jail for Animal Abuse I, Disorderly Conduct II, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Menacing, Resisting Arrest and Criminal Mischief.
