LA GRANDE – (A letter from Superintendent George Mendoza) Late last week Governor Kate Brown took executive action to ensure all public schools provide universal access to in-person instruction for:
● grades K-5 students on or before the week of March 29, 2021 and
● grades 6-12 on or before the week of April 19, 2021.
The La Grande School District is seeking clarity as to whether the executive action allows our grades in hybrid learning (grades 6-12) to return all students to daily in-person instruction, eliminating our current A/B schedule. Existing rules (such as one person per 35 square feet, class cohort sizes, six foot/15 minute contact tracing rule, bus regulations, etc.) prohibit LGSD from returning to our completely in-person model in grades 6-12. These rules may change in the coming weeks, as Governor Brown has directed the Oregon Health Authority and the Oregon Department of Education to issue guidance to school districts to conform to her executive order.
