Burglary and struggle results in arrest

LA GRANDE – UPDATE:  An arraignment was held Friday afternoon at the Union County Courthouse in front of Judge Thomas Powers via video conferencing.  Diaz will be held on $250,000.00 bail.  It was ordered no contact with the victims, Mental Evaluation, Substance Abuse Package, and No Weapons package.   A hearing is scheduled for April 2nd.  

(RELEASE FROM UNION COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE) On February 5, 2021 at about 4:26 am dispatch received a 911 call of a man at gunpoint. Union County Sheriff’s Deputies and La Grande Police Officers responded and arrived on scene moments later. 

Initial investigation revealed suspect Jose Jesus Diaz (DOB 11/17/93) of Plains, Montana broke into the garage of the residence then entered into a vehicle on the property which alerted the property owners. The victim who was armed with a rifle then confronted Jose. A struggle ensued between the victim and Jose.  During the struggle the firearm was discharged and struck Jose in the arm.  

Jose disarmed the victim and then began assaulting the victim with the firearm.  The victim’s son then confronted Jose, removed the firearm from him and held him at gun point until responding units arrived on scene.  Jose was taken into custody. Jose, the victim, and the victim’s son were transported to Grande Ronde Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. 

Jose Jesus Diaz is currently being housed in the Union County Correctional facility for the following charges, Attempted Murder 2, Assault 1, Attempted Assault 1, Robbery 1, Menacing x 2, Pointing a Firearm at Another, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Burglary 2, Trespass and Unauthorized Entry into a Motor Vehicle. At this time the investigation is ongoing and information will be released as it becomes available.
