Acreage on East Elm changed to commercial

HERMISTON – Two annexation requests have been approved by the Hermiston City Council. The larger of the two is 11.5 acres on East Elm Avenue, which included a requested zoning change from medium-density residential to commercial. Landowner Steve Richards of Pendleton intends to build a mini-storage facility there, but that’s not all.
“I believe he’s looking for getting the rest of the property developed so that it’s marketable as commercial property,” Assistant City Manager Mark Morgan said.
Richards has already built a mini-storage facility on West Highland Avenue, and Morgan said another one on the northeast side of town would be welcome.
“It’s a service the people need, up in that area of the city particularly,” Morgan said. “That’s really where we see our large residential growth potential.”
The council also approved annexing a little over an acre of land on Southwest 17th Street. The property owners asked to be annexed so they could connect with city services.
