Teachers approve WWPS reopening plan

WALLA WALLA – Teachers for Walla Walla Public Schools have endorsed the district’s transition to in-person learning with its accompanying safety protocols and procedures. The WWPS Board of Directors also approved the plan earlier this month.
The transition to the AM/PM Hybrid Model will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 19 for preschool and transitional kindergarten students, and for grades K-5 on Monday, Jan. 25. Additionally, students in self-contained special education programs, SEATech students, students in specific career and technical education programs, and a select number of middle and high school students who are identified to be struggling will be permitted on-site access beginning Jan. 19.
The revised Roadmap to Recovery is consistent with state health authorities. It provides for all other students in middle and high school to return to in-person instruction once the case counts reach the state-recommended levels.
“We understand remote learning has been a challenge for families and students across the district,” WWPS Board President Derek Sarley said last week. “The good news is there is a significant amount of research showing we can offer safe in-person instruction as long as we are following all state guidelines.”
The district has hired a company to perform a comprehensive COVID preparedness review. That audit includes a review of the facility and personnel practices, HVAC modifications, and protocols. The firm has already sent a certified industrial hygienist to perform on-site inspections of each of the elementary and preschool sites.
The district will communicate all the changes to parents over the coming days. Families are encouraged to check their phone messages, mailboxes, and email as buildings, programs, and staff begin the outreach necessary.
