CANYON CITY (Press release from the Malheur National Forest)

Fire information

Start Date: August 27, 2023

Size: .10 acre

Cause: Lightning

Fuels: Single snag

Location: Approximately 9.5 miles southeast of Canyon City within the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness, near Wall Creek. T15 R32 Section 15.

Strategy: Due to the fire burning within the 2015 Canyon Creek Fire scar and the abundance of hazardous snags, fire management has chosen an alternative fire suppression strategy. This fire is being managed primarily to provide for firefighter safety. Dry Soda lookout and firefighters from the Blue Mountain Ranger District engine module will monitor the fire throughout the coming weeks. Primary objective is to keep fire away from private lands.

The Forest received numerous lightning strikes and additional new starts from hold overs are likely to be detected throughout the next few days Aerial reconnaissance and fire lookouts are assisting with detection efforts.

Safety: The health and safety of firefighters and the public are always the first priority.
