HERMISTON – The city of Hermiston issued 139 new housing unit permits in 2021. An estimated 125 were issued in 2020. Assistant City Manager Mark Morgan said that reflects the strong and steady growth that the city prefers.

“We don’t necessarily want to see all of a sudden issuing 400 housing units in one year and then zero the next year,” he said.

Of those permits, 48 are for income-restricted apartment units and 39 are manufactured homes as the city strives for more affordable housing in addition to stick-built, single family homes.

“In 2022, we’ll likely see the ground-breaking on a 60 unit income-restricted apartment building, but also we should start to see a good number of manufactured homes being placed in the Santiago Estates manufactured home community,” he said. “Those are good quality affordable housing units.”
