2 routine traffic stops by OSP end up not being routine

UMATILLA COUNTY – Two routine stops for Oregon State Police on Wednesday turned up more upon further investigation.

At 11 a.m. a driving complaint was called in on a commercial semi-truck going eastbound on Interstate 84 at mile marker 188 near US 395/Stanfield exit. The suspected vehicle was located by OSP at mile marker 205, and a traffic stop for an observed driving violation was initiated at mile marker 208 in Pendleton. A law enforcement data systems check showed the driver had an extraditable warrant out of Texas.

Adrian Xavier Alaniz, 45, of Taft, Texas was booked into the Umatilla County jail as a fugitive from another state.

At 7:54 p.m. the Oregon Department of Transportation went to check on a vehicle parked on the shoulder of Interstate 84 at mile marker 237 near the Meacham exit, and it returned as a stolen vehicle out of Hermiston. When OSP arrived, they found a man asleep in the vehicle.

A high risk stop was conducted and Pablo Roman Pita, 29, of Ellensburg, Washington was taken into custody without incident. After an interview Pita was booked into the Umatilla County jail on a charge of felony unauthorized use of a vehicle.
