WALLA WALLA — A 27-year-old man facing charges of first-degree murder made his first court appearance Friday in Walla Walla County Superior Court.
Jordan James Savage, who told the court he resides in his van, was arrested following a law enforcement investigation into the death of Arturo Serrato Martinez, 49, who was killed early Wednesday morning near North Sixth Avenue and West Elm Street.
According to prosecutors, Savage allegedly admitted in an interview with investigators to shooting the victim.
The prosecution detailed several factors in their its for high bail. Savage reportedly purchased two 9mm handguns shortly before the incident; he is alleged to have threatened to kill an eyewitness at gunpoint; and despite having no prior criminal record or warrant history, the state argued Savage poses a significant danger to the community.
Judge Brandon Johnson set bail at $2 million with no cash alternative. The judge also issued a no-contact order prohibiting Savage from communicating with the eyewitness or several other individuals named in the probable-cause statement.
Savage, who stated he earns approximately $800 a month working for DoorDash, was appointed a public defender.
