SOUTHEASTERN OREGON (Released by the BLM Oregon & Washington)-A section of southeastern Oregon was just certified as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, making it the world’s largest Dark Sky Sanctuary to date.

The sanctuary covers 2.5 million acres (aka half the size of New Jersey) within the area we commonly call the Oregon Outback.

About 83% of the global population lives under light polluted skies. This light pollution disrupts our sleep, negatively impacts well-being, disrupts migratory wildlife patterns, and affects the behavior of nocturnal animals.

A Dark Sky Sanctuary certification can be given to land that has exceptional starry nights and nocturnal environments that is protected for its scientific, natural, or educational value, its cultural heritage, and/or public enjoyment.

Now, we can better protect this starry refuge for the benefit of visitors, residents, and wildlife!
