JOHN DAY – January is Poverty Awareness Month, and Grant County Food Bank Manager and Board Chairman Tom Sutton was on KJDY’s Coffee Time Monday. Sutton said over the last six months, they’ve served an average of 178 families per month at their food distribution center on East Main St. in John Day. That takes about 16 volunteers, and $2000 every month to make that happen. He mentioned that there’s always room for volunteer help and monetary donations.
Sutton said the center particularly needs help loading and unloading food items every fourth Tuesday and Wednesday of each month:
“We need some help getting the food off of the truck. Any frozen stuff, we need to take down to the Senior Center to keep it overnight. Then, at 6 o’clock the next morning, we need some help re-loading that frozen stuff and taking it back to the food bank so we can distribute it out up there. There’s a few of us who’re getting to be…a little age on us, so we shouldn’t be lifting that stuff.”
The Grant County Food Bank’s distribution day is held on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except in November and December, when it’s on the 3rd Wednesday), from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Folks can contact the Grant County Food Bank by calling (541) 575-0299.
