Baker City man arrested for stealing Backhoe from ODOT

BAKER CITY  – Oregon State Police (OSP) in Baker County responded to the area of Hwy 245 near mile marker 36 recently reports from an Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) employee that someone had stolen a backhoe from their gravel pit on Hwy 7 and had driven it up Trail Creek Road and was digging with it. 

When the OSP Trooper arrived, the suspect had fled the scene.  The suspect vehicle was left at the ODOT gravel pit on Hwy 7 near mile marker 42.  The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Jason J Efird of Baker City, was determined to be a convicted felon.  Several firearms were seen in the vehicle, so the vehicle was seized pending a search warrant. 

Efird was located and detained on Hwy 245 and lodged for a parole violation. He was arrested on charges of Aggravated Theft I, Possession of Firearm by Felon and Possession of Methamphetamine – 2g or more.
