UNION COUNTY – Wednesday morning, July 21st, 2021, the Union County commissioners voted unanimously to close the Mount Emily Recreation Area (MERA) to all public use. The decision was made in response to the current extreme fire danger and a critical lack of firefighting resources. Due to its popularity, the decision to implement a closure was not taken lightly, and input was sought from a variety of federal, state, and local fire and emergency officials. The closure will be in effect for a minimum of one week and will be reevaluated by the Board of Commissioners on July 28th, 2021. Union County understands the high value of recreation at MERA, and this step was taken to reduce the risk not only of a destructive fire event to such a valuable area but also of fire entrapment of recreationists if a fire were to occur. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation under these extreme fire danger conditions
