Elgin, OR – (Information provided by Union County Sheriff’s Department) On April 20, 2021, at about 1615 hours deputies from the Union County Sheriff’s Office served a restraining order with a court-ordered move out to Mark Strickland (DOB 1/17/60) at 747 North 8th Street in Elgin Oregon. Mark, the recipient of the restraining order, did not answer the front door, instead, he opened the front window of the residence and accepted the paperwork. Mark was told he had to move from the residence at which time he became agitated with the deputies and slammed the window shut. While waiting for Mark to exit the residence and comply with the restraining order, deputies heard what they perceived to be the sound of a single gunshot at 1624 hours from inside the residence.
At this time numerous attempts to contact Mark by knocking on the door and by phone were made with no answer coming from the residence. A group of law enforcement members was assembled, comprised of members of the Union County Sheriff’s Office, the La Grande Police Department, and the Oregon State Police to make entry into the residence. Upon entry into the residence, the group found Mark deceased with a single, self-inflicted, gunshot wound. The Union County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the La Grande Police Department and the Oregon State Police for their assistance with this case.
