PENDLETON – A complicated compromise could be put in place that would allow car-for-hire drivers to operate in the city of Pendleton. The Pendleton City Council heard about a proposal hammered out during meetings with Elite Taxi and the car-for-hire representatives.

The staff overseeing the meetings said both sides were unhappy with some elements of the agreement but are willing to give it a try. Now, the agreement is being worked into the form of an ordinance.

“The ordinance is going to read that seven days a week from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m., car-for-hire drivers will be allowed to operate in Pendleton,” City Manager Robb Corbett said. “Elite will be prohibited from taking cash fare during those hours, except for Fridays and Saturdays.”

The taxi company’s other services will continue unabated.

“It’s a compromise that will exist for a period of time, and then we’ll have a conversation on whether it’s successful,” he said.
