PENDLETON – Oregon Department of Education Director Charlene Williams recently paid her first visit to Umatilla County and InterMountain Education Service District Superintendent Mark Mulvihill said she was impressed with what she saw, especially at the Pendleton Early Learning Center. He credited that to the fact that so many wrap-around social services are available at the same site.

“It’s a one-stop shop and that what makes the PELC really what I consider one of the gems of Oregon,” Mulvihill said. “A parent can come to the PELC and have assistance for whatever they need.”

He said one goal of the trip was to demonstrate the wide geographical area of IMESD. She visited numerous schools from Umatilla to Nixyaawii and he said that goal was accomplished.

“I think we tired her out,” he said.

Mulvihill said that Williams mentioned she wants to come back for the Pendleton Round-Up. That trip, he said, would include another geography lesson.

“Maybe then what we’ll do is take her up to Union County and Morrow County,” he said.
