Wallowa School District Seismic Rehabilitation Grant program

WALLOWA COUNTY – K & A Engineering began geotechnical engineering services last week. This is a big first step in the Seismic Rehabilitation work underway as a part of our $2.287 million dollar grant!

Geotechnical engineering involves field work, which includes probes and sample borings in three locations around the perimeter of the gymnasium. These borings may exceed 24 to 32 feet or more in depth. Their work will also include site research and laboratory analysis.

(History on the seismic grant)

In November of 2019, a Seismic Evaluation was completed in the Wallowa School District. The evaluation looked at the following structures and determined their seismic risk and associated costs for Seismic

Rehabilitation:

The preliminary opinion of probable costs for Seismic Rehabilitation, addressing the Wallowa High School facilities was $8,071,700. Knowing that the Seismic Rehabilitation Grants are limited in funding, the Wallowa

School District determined the Gymnasium was the higher priority and met the funding caps.

On January 17, 2020, the Wallowa School District submitted a Seismic Rehabilitation Grant to address the seismic rehabilitation needs of the gymnasium. The project will involve roof, wall, and floor/foundation strengthening and construction.

On May 27, 2020, the Wallowa School District was awarded $2,287,425 for the Seismic Rehabilitation Grant.

A Request for Proposals (RFP) was advertised on October 7, 2020. Five engineering firms submitted proposals.

On November 10, 2020, the Wallowa School District awarded ZCS Engineering and Architecture with the project and a signed agreement took effect on December 22, 2020.

On January 11, 2021 the Seismic work kicked off with a meeting to delineate the project and determine methodology for construction. A Contract Management/General Contractor (CM/GC) methodology was selected. The initial site visit and evaluation took place on January 21 and 22, 2021.

K & A Engineering was awarded the Geotechnical Engineering Contract. In March, 2021, K&A will investigate using a track mounted Geotechnical drill to probe and bore in a number of locations around the building. After analysis, this data will inform the seismic and foundation design criteria for the project.
