Two escape injury after hitting elk

Harney County – At around 3:45 this morning, Monday, Jan. 11, Oregon State Police responded to a report of a collision between a vehicle and elk on Highway 20 near milepost 106, about 25 miles from Burns. From evidence at the scene and the driver’s statements, it appeared the vehicle, operated by Abigail G. Myers, 24, was westbound traveling at a stated speed of 50 mph when it struck two elk that were standing in the middle of the roadway. One elk was thrown about 30 yards across the eastbound lane and into the ditch. The second elk was injured and had to be dispatched for humanitarian reasons. Neither Myers nor her 21-year-old passenger, Elizabeth Victoria Myers, 21, were injured in the crash. The vehicle was towed from the scene. OSP was assisted on scene by the Oregon Department of Transportation.
