WALLA WALLA – The trial of Brandon O’Neel, the man accused of shooting Washington State Patrol Trooper Dean Atkinson Jr. in September has been delayed. Walla Walla County Superior Court Clerk Kathy Martin said the trial, which was originally scheduled to begin Jan. 24, has been moved to March 21. The trial was moved after both the defense and prosecution requested more time to prepare.

O’Neel allegedly shot Atkinson after local law enforcement evicted him from his apartment earlier that day. He then fled the area and was taken into custody on State Route 125 south of Old Milton Highway. After being shot, Atkinson remained conscious and alert and drove himself to the hospital.

O’Neel faces five felony charges which include first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, attempting to elude a pursuing vehicle, threats to bomb or injure property, and harassment. He is currently being held on a $1 million bond in the Walla Walla County Jail.
