Swinging for Glory: High school baseball & softball playoffs underway

EASTERN OREGON — As high school baseball and softball playoffs begin this week, teams across Eastern Oregon are set to clash in high-stakes battles for a championship.

In Class 4A baseball, No. 5 Pendleton, who came up just short in last year’s championship game, begins its run at another title shot by hosting No. 12 St. Helens at noon on May 21 at Bob White Field.

No. 14 La Grande is on the road to begin the postseason. The Tigers face a huge test as they visit No. 3 Scappoose at 5:00pm also on Tuesday, May 21.

Baker earned itself a spot in the 16-team tournament with a win over Marshfield last week. The Bulldogs face a huge challenge as well as they face No. 1 Henley on May 21 at 5:00pm.

In Class 4A softball, No. 3 Pendleton is also dreaming of holding up another state title. The Lady Buckaroos begin their title quest against No. 14 North Bend at 2:00pm on Tuesday at Sunridge Middle School.

No. 6 La Grande also begins its mission for a championship at home. The Tigers host No. 11 Estacada on Tuesday at 3:30pm.

Wednesday, May 22 also sees playoff action continue, where in 3A softball the defending champs and No. 5 Burns Hilanders host No. 12 Creswell at 4:00pm.

No. 10 Enterprise/Wallowa is on the road near Eugene to take on No. 7 Pleasant Hill at 4:00pm. 

In 2A/1A softball, defending champions Grant Union/Prairie City also looks to repeat as champs. The No. 1 Prospectors host Myrtle Point at home on May 22 at 4:30pm.

No. 2 Weston-McEwen/Griswold also begins its postseason at home against No. 15 Blanchet Catholic on Wednesday at 4:30pm.

Also on Wednesday, No. 10 Hepper/Ione/Condon is on the road near Roseburg to take on No. 7 Oakland at 1:00pm.

In 3A baseball, No. 8 Joseph/Enterprise/Wallowa is at home against No. 9 Brookings-Harbor on Wednesday at 4:00pm.

In 2A/1A baseball action on Wednesday, May 22, No. 8 Grant Union/Prairie City faces off against No. 9 Kennedy from Salem at home starting at 2:00pm.

No. 10 Heppner/Ione is on the road and along the Columbia River as they visit No. 7 Clatskanie at 4:30pm. 

No. 15 Irrigon travels to Roseburg to take on No. 2 Umpqua Valley Christian at 4:30pm.

No. 22 Union/Cove will be outside of Salem to face No. 6 St. Paul at 4:30pm.
