UMATILLA & MORROW COUNTIES – The West Umatilla Mosquito Control District and the North Morrow Vector Control District will conduct targeted aerial mosquito control spraying with a twin-engine plane after sunset Thursday if the weather permits. If there is a weather delay a treatment will occur on the next available day.

The application is taking place in response to a large hatch of mosquitoes impacting areas in western Umatilla and northern Morrow counties. A total of 5,000 acres will be targeted in the Highway 730 area between the cities of Umatilla and Irrigon. The South Hill neighborhood is included in this spray block.

Both agencies offer suggestions to reduce the mosquito population. That includes of disposing of old tires and other containers where water can accumulate. Horse troughs should be flushed or have the water replaced weekly. Flush ornamental ponds or add mosquito fish to them. Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn. When in mosquito-infested areas wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants and use mosquito repellents containing DEET, following the directions on the label. Also ensure that screens are free of holes and windows are closed.
