Hydrant damaged in “Hit and Run”

BAKER CITY – A fire hydrant was damaged in Baker City recently.  According to an update on the city from Baker City Manager Jonathan Cannon, “It appears as if a vehicle was being driven in a nearby field spinning “cookies” and when attempting to re-enter the street ran directly over the top of the hydrant.

Fire hydrants are specifically designed to break off at ground level to not cause any additional damage to an errant vehicle. One other design fact is that the valve at the bottom of the hydrant remains shut when broken so water doesn’t spray high into the air. Parts to perform the repair have been ordered. The damage is a “hit and run”.”
