HEPPNER – Oregon State Representative Greg Smith looks back at the 2023 legislative session saying there were many gains for his district. The one he’s proudest of has to do with higher education.

“Any student, whether you’re in Milton-Freewater, or Hermiston, Irrigon, Condon, all the way over to Madras, if you come from District 57 and you go to Eastern Oregon University, your tuition is paid for,” he said. “One of the things I wanted to do, especially coming out of COVID, was make it easier on our students.”

Legislative Director Dawson Quinton of Smith’s office said the Republican from Heppner secured a $1 million allocation from the legislature to Eastern Oregon University. The scholarships are awarded to District 57 students attending EOU. The maximum award is for $9,000 for the year.

“This fall term, EOU paid out 91 awards to students from District 57 with an average award of $2,883,” Quinton wrote in an email.

“Awards will be offered to new students entering EOU during the year,” Quinton wrote. “The scholarships were offered to undergraduate and graduate students to assist in offsetting the educational costs of attending EOU.”

District 57 encompasses parts or all of Morrow, Gilliam, Sherman, Umatilla, Wheeler, Wasco, Jefferson, Marion, and Clackamas counties.
