GRANT COUNTY – On Tuesday afternoon, the Mt. Vernon Fire Department responded to a location on Clark’s Creek Road in Grant County for the report of a grass fire. According to Fire Chief Justin May, the cause of the blaze appears to be an escaped burn pile. Around three acres were burned, including the landowner’s UTV, which Grant County Emergency Management reports was used in an attempt to contain the fire. In total, Chief May said firefighters were on the scene for approximately three hours, which includes travel time to-and-from the remote location.

The chief wanted to remind Grant County residents that, “It is much drier than it looks out there. [Add] a little bit of wind, and things can go sideways in a hurry.” He mentioned that the landowner had a dozer on scene, which helped with suppression.

May also said for any Grant County landowners planning on doing spring burning to contact the Grant County Emergency Communication Center’s non-emergency line at (541) 575-0195 prior to burning.
