JOHN DAY – Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley was in the KJDY and News 102 Newsroom on Thursday, discussing an RV trailer fire on S. Canyon Blvd. in John Day earlier that morning. The Sheriff said a pickup and trailer were headed south on the boulevard when there was a fire in the area of the gooseneck fifth-wheel hitch on the trailer:

“Fortunately, they stopped right in front of the fire station and several individuals were there rapidly—law enforcement; State Police, County; Fire Chief—everybody got there pretty quick. [They] used fire extinguishers to get the majority of the fire out, and then there was still some heat up in there, and they were having to disassemble it some. Once they got the main part of the fire out, they were able to move the pickup and camper off the highway and get the highway back open.”

The Sheriff said traffic was restricted to one lane on S. Canyon Blvd./Hwy. 395 while the incident was immediately dealt with.
