COLLEGE PLACE – Starting this coming school year, College Place Public Schools will add a full-time licensed mental health therapist and a second full-time school counselor at Davis Elementary School, following the addition of a second counselor at College Place High School.

Superintendent Jim Fry said with escalating needs, the district must match these needs with support and resources.

Recent surveys by the Pew Research Center and the National Center for Education Statistics indicate that over 40 percent of students feel persistently sad or hopeless, with significant numbers considering or attempting suicide.

Fry said national data, which includes parental concerns, positive outcomes for schools with mental health professionals and a school climate with a comprehensive mental health program, supports this increase in mental health services within the district.
