COLLEGE PLACE – The College Place Police Department reports a car completely penetrated and passed through a home just after 7 a.m. Friday on the 100 block of Southwest 13th Street before coming to rest in the home’s backyard.
When officers arrived to the scene, they found the 42-year-old male driver from College Place still sitting inside the vehicle, but he had sustained minor cuts and bruises. The homeowner who was sleeping in her bedroom at the time of the collision was outside when officers arrived. The homeowner reported other family members were not home at the time of the collision.
Residential security footage showed the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on Southwest Bade Avenue at a high rate of speed. The vehicle did not leave any skid marks or evidence of evasive driving as it struck the home. The vehicle drove through the home, including an unoccupied bedroom belonging to the family’s daughter who was not home at the time.
Prior to colliding with the home, the suspect driver ran a stop sign at the intersection of Southwest 12th Avenue and Bade Avenue, then narrowly passed a group of joggers before colliding with the home.
“It’s a miracle nobody was injured,” CPPD Chief Troy Tomaras said.
Tomaras added that the suspect driver informed officers he was trying to end his life. The driver was transported to Providence St. Mary Medical Center for evaluation, released and booked into the Walla Walla County Jail. Charges for reckless driving, assault and reckless endangerment will be referred to the Walla Walla County Prosecuting Attorney.
