PENDLETON – Pendleton Police Chief Chuck Byram is taking a leave of absence for hip replacement surgery. He’s looking on the bright side as to his return.

“The doctor wants me to take four to six (weeks), but hopefully I’m back before a month,” he said.

Lt. Tony Nelson will be at the helm for the police department during Byram’s absence. The chief said he’s already thinking about the path to recovery.

“All I have to do is control pain, avoid infection, and avoid blood clots,” he said. “I’ve been dealing this this for about six or seven years, and it’s just time to get it done.”

Byram said he will miss the department’s Shop with a Cop program and other holiday festivities, especially the one involving School Resource Officer Lance Zaugg.

“I know he’ll be getting his beard decorated again,” he said. “I can’t wait to see what it looks like this year.”
